Pigmentation occurs when imbalances of melanin and disorders of the skin lead to an inconsistent colouration and patterning on the skin’s surface. Pigmentation can result in unattractive blotches upon a person’s skin.
Skin pigmentation - What is it? And how can you treat it?
What is Pigmentation?
Pigmentation is essentially the result of the overproduction of melanin pigment. Melanin is a pigment that determines the colour and tone of a person’s skin. It is this pigment that also creates our hair and eye colour. Imbalances of melanin and disorders of the skin can eventually lead to an inconsistent colouration and patterning which creates unattractive blotches upon a person’s skin. Women and men of colour naturally have more melanin present in their skin, which can manifest into darker patches and create an uneven tone.
What causes skin pigmentation?
When skin cells become damaged or unhealthy, extra melanin is naturally produced to help protect a person’s skin. However, in the case of unhealthy skin, uneven skin tones can be caused by damaged cells preventing the pigment from being produced. As a result, parts of your skin may turn lighter (hypopigmentation) or darker (hyperpigmentation).
More women than men with ethnic skin may suffer with pigmentation, and this is due to the fact that the female hormones of oestrogen and progesterone can also overstimulate melanin production in the skin. This can actually get worse during pregnancy when more of these hormones are produced, or when exposed to sunlight and UV rays – this can lead to conditions known as melasma or chloasma – different types of conditions that also result in darker patches on the skin. If you are a woman with dark skin, you may find that, unlike women with caucasian skin, wrinkles and ageing aren’t such a problem for you, however, the darker, uneven patches caused by hyperpigmentation are. However, pigmentation can affect all skin types, but luckily there are incredible aesthetic treatments that can really help.
How to get rid of pigmentation?
We are experts at Pigmentation Removal here at our Liverpool clinic. Pigmentation can be a tricky condition to know how to treat effectively, and because of this it is really important that if you are looking to correct this condition you find a clinic who knows how to treat it confidently. In fact, many clinics become nervous treating skin that is above level 4 on the Fitzpatrick scale. The Fitzpatrick skin type system has been around since 1975 and works on a 1-6 scale. It ranges from the ‘lowest’ skin type 1 which is classified as ‘ivory skin’ that is likely to burn easily and freckle in the sun and goes right up to the ‘highest’ skin type 6. Fitzpatrick skin type 6 is ‘dark brown to black skin’ which never freckles and will always develop a dark tan in the sun. Skin type 4 is olive and light brown skin that often tans.
Here at Aesthetics of Liverpool we are adept at working with all skin types and are very confident when working with skin types 4-6 on the scale to give all our clients the best skin they can possibly have. Glutathione is commonly known as the body’s most important antioxidant. This is because it is responsible for fighting disease in our body – particularly those associated with aging. Glutathione is also capable of brightening the skin’s appearance and overall complexion by inhibiting the production of the enzyme responsible for the skin’s overall pigmentation.
Our Glutathione IV, Pure beauty drip has been specially formulated and combines glutathione with vitamins & minerals to restore collagen, stimulate elastin production and brighten skin. This is what makes this IV drip so effective in working to improve and brighten discolouration caused by hyperpigmentation. Oral supplementation of glutathione is less efficacious as it gets broken down by the enzymes in the digestive tract. Therefore, the only ways to increase the levels are IV/IM glutathione supplementation or by increasing levels of its precursors. Similarly, any factors that contribute to the regeneration of active glutathione from its inactive form will increase the functional capacity of glutathione. IV Glutathione is an effective solution for a variety of pigmentation skin conditions.
Fusion Mesotherapy RF is a needle-free electroporation radio frequency device which can be used for various treatment protocols.
Fusion Mesotherapy emits pulsed radio frequency to open transitional channels and pores at the cellular level. This process allows the product to penetrate into the skin and into the cells. This treatment method is called electroporation, needle-free mesotherapy, no-needle mesotherapy or virtual mesotherapy.
Mesotherapy treatment provides other advantages over a standard dermal roller treatment. Most significantly areas of the face that have previously been difficult to treat are no longer a problem, as the Meso Pen is a smaller device, making it easier to achieve superior results in areas around the eyes, nose and lips. Mesotherapy treatment is ideal for skin tightening, skin rejuvenation, lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, smoothing of stretch marks and pigmentation.

We are incredibly excited to offer The PRXT 33 at our Liverpool clinic. This is a remarkable peel that comes without any downtime whatsoever. PRX-T33 is a facial peeling procedure based on the well-known trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel.TCA is one of the most popular peeling treatments, as it is a non-toxic chemical which causes the top layer of cells to dry up and peel off the skin. This can help to de clog and brighten skin and improve the appearance of pigmentation in dark skin.
With PRX-T33, a combination of TCA and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) quickly penetrates the dermis (one of the skin’s layers), activating a process of regeneration without attacking the epidermis (the outer layer of skin). The PRX-T33 solution contains 33% TCA and 67% hydrogen peroxide. The combination of TCA and hydrogen peroxide stimulates the dermis non-invasive, while minimising the aggressive exfoliation of the dermis.
LED light Therapy is a revolutionary new technology. At Aesthetics of Liverpool we offer four different colours of LED Therapy, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red. The specific colour wavelengths are able to penetrate the skin to treat a wide number of conditions such as Acne, Pigmentation, Seasonal Depression, Eczema and Psoriasis. For pigmentation issues, the treatment works by utilising wavelengths of light energy, this energy works to penetrate the skins underlying tissue to trigger collagen production and other biochemical mechanisms leaving skin brighter and more rejuvenated.
Precision Lift is a medical grade, a state-of-the-art micro-needling device designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles scars and pigmentation conditions on the face and body.
It allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair process by creating thousands of precise micro-injuries in the dermis, automatically triggering new collagen synthesis without causing scar tissue formation. It can be used on any skin area that needs cell regeneration or intense repair. Precision Lift Skin Pen is a tried and tested solution for a variety of skin pigmentation conditions which delivers significant results with minimal downtime.
At Aesthetics of Liverpool we offer a range of Skin Peels. Peels are an incredibly popular treatment as results can be seen immediately and leave skin looking smooth and radiant. A Peel treatment works by removing dead skin cells, encouraging cellular renewal as well as collagen production.
Often the products that we buy in stores will make skin appear smooth and soft however the product will only reach the top layer of the skin. When a skin peel is applied it essentially removes the top layer of skin, and reveals the smoother new skin that lies beneath. This can be really effective for pigmentation removal.
E-Light for Pigmentation
The E-light combines RF & IPL technology in a single handheld device and is used to effectively treat skin pigmentation. E-Light can be applied to the face, neck, chest and hands, and has proved to be very effective when treating simple unnatural skin pigmentation.
First, the highly effective IPL energy is used to preheat the target area, creating a thermal path for the Radio Frequency energy to travel. The electromagnetic energy is applied directly to the vascular & pigmented lesions or across the skin requiring attention, delivering extremely impressive results.
