Do you hope for tighter, smoother skin and to reduce signs of cellulite? Then you are not alone as many of us feel insecure about our skin and the dimpled appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is most common in people over the age of 25, regardless of whether they have excess body fat or are fit and healthy. In fact, 80-90% of all women have cellulite and even 10% of men too! Cellulite usually appears around the buttocks and upper thighs, but it can also show on your arms and around your stomach.

With our brand new, Prosculpt treatments, you can combat your signs of cellulite, whilst building muscle and burning fat. Prosculpt is a step up from Emsculpt, the treatment of the past! It’s an innovative body contouring procedure that can give you back your body confidence without having to go under the knife. Please keep reading to learn more about how the non-invasive Prosculpt body contouring treatment can reduce the appearance of your cellulite.

What is Cellulite and How Does it Form?

Regardless of what people think, cellulite is not directly caused by excess fat. Treatments that aim to remove excess fat, such as liposuction surgery, often do not affect an individual’s cellulite. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, even by adhering to a healthy lifestyle and losing weight, the dimpled appearance of your cellulite may improve, but it may not be eliminated.

The cause of cellulite, therefore, lies deeper in the structure of the tissue beneath the skin. Here, there is a layer of fat which covers a sheet of the fascia. Fascia is a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue which lines muscles and organs.

In addition to the fascia, there is also fibrous connective tissue known as septa in our bodies. For women, this fibrous tissue runs vertically in bands between the skin and the fascia, bundling fat into honeycomb-shaped compartments. For men, their tissue has a criss-cross effect rather than vertical bands. The crisscrossing produces a tightly woven structure, making fat less likely to protrude out.

As hormone levels respond to critical periods in our lives, such as pregnancy or ageing, the bands or crisscrossing septa can stiffen. Once rigid, the tissue pulls the skin downwards and compresses the fat until it bulges out of its compartments, causing cellulite.

The Severity of Cellulite

For women, the hormonal changes that occur as they head into the menopause can worsen their cellulite. The drop in their oestrogen levels decreases the production of their collagen (a vital protein in the body for maintaining the structure and elasticity of the skin), which thins out the skin. As the skin becomes weaker, the lumps of cellulite under the surface become more apparent.

Other factors which influence the severity of someone’s cellulite is a slower metabolism and lower blood circulation, in addition to other genetic factors.

There are three grades of cellulite.

Grade 1: Mild Cellulite

Mild cellulite is commonly referred to as ‘orange-peel.’ It has one to four shallow dimples, and the skin sags down slightly.

Grade 2: Moderate Cellulite

Moderate cellulite is commonly described as ‘cottage cheese’ cellulite and will show five to nine deeper dimples. The skin in these instances sags more noticeably.

Grade 3: Severe Cellulite

Severe cellulite is dubbed as a ‘mattress’ look. There are often ten or more deeper dimples in the skin, and sagging is significant.

How can ProSculpt treatment help combat your cellulite?

Prosculpt works by emitting High-Intensity Focused Electro-Magnetic energy (HIFEM) to induce ultra-intense, supramaximal muscle contractions. These contractions mimic the effect exercise has on our muscles, and the body, therefore, believes it is undergoing an intense workout.

The HIFEM intensifies these contractions more than a regular workout routine or class. In one 30-minute session, the Prosculpt machine can produce around 36,000 muscle contractions. The constant contracting of the muscles puts them under stress and triggers rapid changes at the cellular level.

While the body is undergoing the Prosculpt treatment, the muscles require a greater supply of energy to keep up with the supramaximal contractions. This process also affects the neighbouring fat cells. The fat cells begin to break down via lipolysis, releasing fatty acids as they are destroyed. The damage to the fat cells is unrepairable and the body naturally eliminates them as the cells die.

The combined action of the muscles tightening and the fat-cell destruction results in stronger and more defined muscles. The skin tightens and regains some of its elastic properties, strengthening the surface and creating a smoother appearance. With less fat cells and firmer skin, the amount of cellulite under the surface is reduced, and the dimpled appearance is diminished.
