Did You Know We Specialise In Pigmentation Removal?
Unwanted pigmentation is something that most of us have to deal with in our lives. Whilst you may refer to this skin condition as ‘hyperpigmentation’, you may not realise that this is simply an umbrella term, and you may be experiencing ‘melasma’ pigmentation. The difference between the two is that melasma is a condition that occurs due to hormone imbalance making it common in women – especially pregnant women. Due to darker skin tones containing more melanin-producing cells, Asian skin types are far more prone to experiencing melasma. Since hormones cause melasma, it can make treatment more complex than simple hyperpigmentation, which may be treated by over the counter products.
Thankfully, here at Aesthetics of Liverpool, we specialise in pigmentation removal for even the most stubborn melasma! No matter where your skin tone sits on the Fitzpatrick Scale, we can help.
The Fitzpatrick Scale is a numerical classification of human skin tones. It was created in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, an American dermatologist. From one to five, human skin colour is categorised into the following groupings:
- Type I always burns, never tans (palest; freckles)
- Type II usually burns, tans minimally (light coloured but darker than fair)
- Type III sometimes mild burn, tans uniformly (golden honey or olive)
- Type IV burns minimally, always tans well (moderate brown)
- Type V very rarely burns, tans very easily (dark brown)
- Type VI never burns (deeply pigmented dark brown to darkest brown
Our treatments are suitable for all skin types on the Fitzpatrick Scale, making us the ideal place to even out your skin tone, restoring your skin to its youthful glow.
What are our treatments?
Cosmelan Depigmenting Skin Peel
This unique, multi-ingredient chemical treatment can reduce the unwanted appearance of blemishes and dark spots. Within a week after your peel, you will notice a brighter, smoother complexion of your skin. After a few weeks, your skin will have a much healthier glow, and this will continue to improve for up to 6 weeks. You should have a peel every six weeks to keep your skin looking smooth and bright for the best results. This treatment is suitable for all skin types, from caucasian to darker skin tones.
How does it work?
Unlike other harsh chemical peels, Cosmelan contains Azelaic Acid, killing bacteria on the surface and encouraging cell production to create a radiant glow. Cosmelan also contains Kojic Acid, which is naturally occurring in fungi and inhibits the production of melanin! Cosmelan works by decreasing the skin’s melanin production by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase. When finished, the enzyme recovers its activity producing new melanin, particularly if there is sun exposure. Due to this, the application of homecare products must be used to maintain results.
What’s the procedure?
A mask is applied at our clinic that remains on your face for 8 hours. The treatment itself only takes around 20-30 minutes. The mask is washed off at home, and you may expect 2 to 7 days of light to heavy peeling, redness, sensitivity and mild swelling. The following day after the treatment, you are offered to lie under the photobiomodulation LED to assist with the healing process and reduce redness.
Benefits of the Cosmelan skin peel
- Reduces the appearance of dark spots caused by pigmentation
- Works to treat both Melasma and Chloasma
- Minimal discomfort and gentle enough to suit all skin types
- Very quick results
Dermamelan Depigmentation Treatment
Dermamelan is a medium depth skin peel that utilises essential organic acids to inhibit melanin production. Glutathione, kojic acid, TCA, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and a blend of minerals and vitamins, including vitamin C. Kojic acid is a powerful brightening agent and proven to increase collagen and elastin production, resulting in skin that is brighter and tighter. Dermamelan is suitable for all skin types, from caucasian to darker skin. Those with lighter skin may be expected to wear the mask for around eight hours, whereas those with darker skin tones may wear it for up to twelve hours.
TCA, phenol and retinoic acid reduce wrinkles and correct pigment problems, while salicylic acid exfoliates the skin and reduces inflammation. Alone the ingredients are powerful, but in combination, they produce astonishing results. The whole process takes less than 15 minutes and is virtually pain-free, and can be a fantastic treatment used every six weeks to make a difference in hyper-pigmentation in your skin.
This peel’s ingredients are similar to The Cosmelan Peel, but our Dermamelan Peel has added Titanium Dioxide. The addition of this mineral protects the skin from UVA and UVB radiation, whilst respecting the skin’s sensitivity. This gentle component is great for sensitive skin that wants to be protected from the sun, as it has properties that see a reduction in redness and pores. The combination of chemicals in Dermamelan work against the production of melanin, reducing pigmentation.
Whilst Cosmelan is used for milder pigmentation issues, Dermamelan is a medical-grade peel used for deeper, more severe pigmentation problems.
