Everything You Need To Know About Ultherapy

Everything You Need To Know About Ultherapy

As we all grow older, our bodies will naturally show signs of ageing. For most, it begins with the odd grey hair, a slight deterioration in hearing, and longer recovery after exercise! However, it’s not long before we start to see the effect on our skin.

A common complaint in ageing skin is a loss of elasticity, which over time can result in loose, sagging skin. Unfortunately, there is no set time in life when these telltale signs start to occur. If these start to appear before you turn 35, they are a sign of premature ageing. At Aesthetics of Liverpool, we want everyone to feel comfortable and confident in their own skin. But, we do understand how signs of ageing, whether prematurely or not, can take their toll on our self-confidence—in some cases, stopping people from living their life to the full.

Ultherapy is the only FDA-approved, non-invasive procedure that targets skin tightening whilst being scientifically proven at producing new collagen growth. As a result, this revolutionary treatment leads the way in skin tightening procedures, providing a lifted result that improves as the body’s natural healing process produces more collagen.

What is Ultherapy

Ultherapy is a non-surgical facelift! Now, there’s no need to go under the knife; instead, you can target your sagging, loose skin at its core with a non-invasive procedure. Ultherapy uses advanced ultrasound energy with real-time visualisation to accurately direct the heat energy deeper into the dermis.

The treatment is also rejuvenating as it is able to stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, enabling the body to continue improving and strengthening the new lifted look. The results are a restored youthful appearance with a revived natural glow, all achieved without the inconvenience and downtime of surgery.

Over the years, Ultherapy treatment has become more popular, increasing by 11.6% from 2015 to 2016 alone; what’s more, asking patients one year after their treatment has received a 95% satisfaction rating.

Why is collagen so important?

Collagen is the most abundant protein found within our bodies. On average, there are at least 10,000 different proteins in the human body, and 30% of these are collagen. This protein is used to create connective tissue and is an important component of bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and cartilage. Due to its role in joining tissue, collagen adds strength and resilience, more importantly, it can withstand any stretching.

When collagen is considered in the skin, its supple qualities become more obvious. As a result, collagen is able to provide skin with a tight and firm appearance; however, as we age, the body’s ability to replenish collagen naturally decreases by 1% to 1.5% each year. With less collagen, to provide our skin with its resilience, skin can begin to sag as it becomes structurally weaker.

Fortunately, ultrasound is tried and tested technology when it comes to stimulating the production of collagen. In doing so, your body will continue to replenish your body’s levels of collagen after your treatment has finished.

So, how does Ultherapy work?

Ultherapy is an ultrasound energy device that emits High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) waves at approximately 60°-70°. At this temperature, the applicator’s heat energy can penetrate deeper into the dermal and sub-dermal layers of skin. With Ultherapy, the specialist clinician can see the layers of tissue on the real-time visualisation screen, ensuring the energy waves target the specific areas that would be most beneficial.

Here, the heat energy is hot enough to cause controlled injuries to the tissue, causing the body to trigger its natural healing process. The ultrasound waves stimulate this process, which involves collagen production in an attempt to re-connect any broken tissue. As the body replenishes its collagen levels, the skin dramatically improves and regain its firm, youthful appearance.

The Ultherapy treatment is an advanced form of HIFU as the clinical can control and optimise the depth and temperature of the ultrasound waves, ultimately improving its precision. It is these three features that set it apart from traditional laser treatments.

1) Depth

As our collagen production reduces, the skin begins to sag due to the structural breakdown in the SMAS layer. Until now, the SMAS layer could only be reached and repaired by risky surgical procedures and some laser therapies. However, laser therapy can only penetrate approximately 3mm below the skin’s surface. Ultherapy offers a safer and more effective solution. With its ability to reach 4.5mm deep, Ultherapy can penetrate the SMAS layer without causing trauma to the skin’s surface.

2) Temperature

Scientific evidence indicates that the optimal contraction of collagen occurs between the temperatures of 60°-70°. Ultherapy is the only technology to reach these temperatures without heating the skin’s surface and causing damage.

3) Precision

Ultherapy is the only laser technology that can accurately target the intended treatment area without harming the surrounding area. Its unmatchable precision sets this treatment apart on the safety scale, and all of this is made possible with real-time visualisation technology.

This treatment is safe to use anywhere on the body. However, it is FDA-approved for lifting the skin around the neck, including jowls, chin, mid-face and brows. It is also known for improving lines and blemishes on the upper chest.

What to expect from your Ultherapy treatment

Ultherapy can typically take anywhere between 30 to 90 minutes; however, these timings are merely an estimation. The duration of the procedure is very much dependent on which areas are being targeted and how extensive the client’s sagging skin is. For example, if the focus is purely on a décolletage treatment, this could take as little as half an hour. But, if you are having treatment on your face and neck, you’ll need to factor in longer. We offer an initial consultation before any treatment at Aesthetics of Liverpool; this will all be explained to you in relation to your unique situation.

In terms of long-term results, don’t expect to see any notable changes until you reach three to six months after your session. Ultherapy is all about remodelling the facial tissues, so you need to be in it for the long game. While some may see results in the first six weeks, it is normal for results to take up to six months to see the outcome.

However, the great thing about Ultherapy is that it can be a one-time treatment. While it can take a while to see results, the results are very much long-term and could last you for years to come. Some people opt for a second appointment, but it is not essential and will depend on individual cases. First-time procedure results are typically very positive. For example, 67% of patients reported being very satisfied with their results 90 days after treatment.

Does skin tightening treatment hurt?

With Ultherapy, you can expect to experience some discomfort, especially when the applicator is active. Individuals who have undergone the procedure reported feeling sharp tingling sensations. However, as we always stress, everyone is different regarding their pain threshold. But, if you are worried about the sensation, don’t worry! Just let us know, and our clinicians can offer some local anaesthesia to alleviate any discomfort.

After the treatment, it is natural to experience some swelling and minor bruising. Still, the large majority of people bounce back within a few days without experiencing any issues compromising their day-to-day activities.

Ultimately, Ultherapy is an excellent treatment due to its long-lasting results and overall effectiveness. The treatment can significantly improve loose, sagging skin and is a great way to boost your confidence without the risk of complications associated with more invasive surgeries. We pride ourselves on helping you become your best, most vibrant self and will be there through every step of the process to address any questions and concerns you may have.
