Is The Menopause Affecting Your Skin? We Can Help.
Menopause is the natural change in hormone levels for women a year after their period ends. Over the years, menopause has been demonised to the extent that many women fear this change; however, it is entirely natural and nothing to be afraid of. This period of a woman’s life isn’t called ‘the change’ for nothing, as a series of physical and mental changes overcome the body. Sadly, there is often little talk on how menopause can alter a woman’s appearance. We want to help make the menopause experience as smooth and comfortable as possible for all women.
If you are worried about menopausal changes to your appearance, please keep reading to see the range of treatments we offer here at Aesthetics of Liverpool. Menopause can be a wonderful time and marks a significant point in a woman’s life. However, just because society demonised this natural time doesn’t mean it is something to fear. If you want to delay some of the physical changes that accompany menopause, then we can help!
What is menopause?
Menopause occurs later on in life, typically in women between the ages of 45 to 50. Menopause occurs due to a change in the levels of sex hormones. Oestrogen levels decline to a point where you no longer release an egg which ultimately causes your period. Menopause occurs precisely twelve months after your final period.
How can menopause affect your skin?
As menopause occurs due to declining estrogen levels, this can affect the appearance of hair and skin. Estrogen aids water retention, which ultimately causes the skin to appear plump, firm and youthful. When estrogen drops, so does the ability to retain moisture molecules, allowing the skin to be naturally moisturised and rejuvenated, which means that skin will age faster after menopause. Declining estrogen levels can be associated with a few different changes to the skin, including fine lines, dryness, impaired wound healing and protection from UV rays.
Common effects of menopause on the skin
- Loss of collagen
- Loose skin
- Fine lines
- Thinning of skin
- Skin dryness
- Delayed wound healing
- Night sweats and flushes
- Increase in facial hair
Now don’t panic! Whilst all of the above sound pretty intimidating, there are ways to tackle and aid these symptoms to restore your skin to its former appearance.
What treatments can help restore your skin?
You may well have heard of this globally renowned treatment, popularised by celebrities worldwide. However, whilst this treatment used only to be available to the rich and famous, here at Aesthetics of Liverpool, we offer this groundbreaking treatment to all women who are interested.
SkinPen is a medical-grade micro-needling device, working effectively on all different skin types on the Fitzgerald scale. SkinPen works by causing hundreds of micro-injuries in the dermis (deeper layer of skin); these micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing response to produce more collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are the proteins responsible for rejuvenating and revitalising skin, giving you the appearance of plumper, younger skin. What’s more, this procedure only lasts around 30 minutes and has no downtime!
Morpheus8 combines the power of micro-needling and radiofrequency energy to improve skin tone and texture. This treatment is a non-surgical alternative to a facelift. Similar to SkinPen, Morpheus8 uses micro-needling to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which plumps and revitalises the skin. However, alongside the micro-needling treatment, radiofrequency energy penetrates the dermis, emitting heat to enhance collagen production further. The dual components of this treatment make it highly effective for treating the overall texture of the skin and firming it, helping with sagging skin that accompanies menopause.
FORMA is the latest in skin remodelling technology; heat is delivered to the dermis, which causes the underlying tissue to be re-organised and remodelled, tightening the skin underneath. This creates a lifted appearance and reduces the appearance of sagging skin. Furthermore, the heat energy emitted stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which helps improve the texture of the skin, creating an overall youthful, tighter complexion. The FORMA device has a built-in thermal sensor that allows practitioners to control the heat level to meet each patient’s unique needs. This device is great at treating the forehead, nasolabial folds, jowls and neck.
IPL stands for ‘Intense Pulsed Light’ and is a technology that is a type of light therapy designed to treat several skin issues, including fine lines, spots and other signs of menopause. You may be wondering how IPL is different from laser treatments; well, laser treatments use just one wavelength to target the skin, whereas IPL uses numerous wavelengths. The light form is more scattered in IPL than laser, helping it penetrate deeper into the dermis without damaging the top layer of skin. Pigment cells absorb the light energy and convert it into heat. This then destroys the pigment cells, clearing up any pigmentation on the skin.
As you can see, we offer a wide range of treatments that can effectively target and fight the signs of menopause. Menopause doesn’t have to be a scary time and should be a celebration of women bodies and the powers of femininity. That being said, we can all celebrate our bodies whilst still taking care of them outside.
