Manual Lymphatic Drainage: Our Therapists Are Vodder Trained!
Manual lymphatic drainage is similar to a massage; however, it targets the lymphatic system below the skin’s surface instead of targeting deep tissue tension. Naturally, your lymphatic fluid contains an essential concoction of infection-fighting antibodies, cell waste and other toxins creating a crucial immune system booster. However, if your lymphatic liquid moves slowly, you may be more susceptible to illnesses and feeling tired.
In the 1930s, two Danish physicians (Emil and Estrid Vodder) created the Vodder massage, consisting of a series of sweeping hand motions that vary depending on the treated area. Vodder developed the technique to treat Lymphedema, a condition caused by the build-up of lymphatic liquid in soft tissue. However, the benefits of the Vodder massage are now known to help many common issues.
Here at Aesthetics of Liverpool, all of our therapists are Vodder trained, as the procedure must be performed carefully and correctly to achieve the best results for your health. Our therapists are the best as they understand the importance of creating a light touch, with pumping, circular-shaped movements, to encourage lymphatic liquid into the correct drainage vessels. In addition, your therapist must have a deeper understanding of the biology behind the procedure.
MLD as a crucial component in liposuction recovery
MLD is frequently recommended during the recovery phase after cosmetic liposuction as it can decrease the recovery time and improve results by reducing surgical swelling and fibrosis. In addition, the massage process has been proved to work effectively, and it’s recommended that the patient receives several sessions to help speed up the recovery stage and experience the best results from the surgery.
MLD is an effective treatment for any of the below issues:
Post-traumatic and post-surgical edema
Edema is a condition that can occur after surgery and involves trapped fluid in the bodies tissues- especially in the feet, ankles, legs, arms and hands. Causing painful swelling, and one limb may appear larger than the other. The circling motions help drain the fluid build-up and promote recovery after injury/surgery.
Chronic venous insufficiency
Veins in the leg inhibit blood from flowing up to your heart, causing blood to pool in the legs, which can often be painful and lead to many other health difficulties. MLD can increase blood flow in both superficial and deep veins! Thus, making it an effective treatment for venous insufficiency.
Acne and Eczema
In recent years, people have started incorporating MLD into their beauty regime to treat skin conditions. Since the lymphatic system lies just beneath the skin carrying toxins and bacteria, it can lead to redness and swelling. However, unlike topical solutions, MLD can help cure skin conditions at the root as it stimulates hormones and toxins to move freely, preventing the recurrence of inflammation!
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that is connected to the lymphatic system. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you may experience poor lymph flow as the disease progresses, along with tissue swelling, pain in the joints, loss of function in joints. Lymphatic drainage can help ease the symptoms of all these.
The higher your metabolic rate, the more effectively you burn fat and therefore lose weight. Regular lymphatic massages prevent your metabolic system from slowing down, helping reduce weight gain. It also stimulates weight loss by speeding up a slow metabolism. The more lymphatic massages you receive, the more your metabolic rate will increase. MLD can also help with water retention as the main objective is to carry and dispose of fluid waste, meaning that excess water will also be disposed of.
Fibromyalgia is one of the most common chronic pain conditions affecting millions of people around the world. Fibromyalgia can be extremely difficult to treat; however, research has proven that MLD is highly effective as it helps relieve pain, stiffness and general health status. In addition, MLD is proven to be more effective than a regular massage.
Bloating is a common symptom of menopause due to fluctuating hormones during this period of a woman’s life. With its decongestive benefits, MLD drains the tissue of excess water; this type of massage also reduces stress and helps contribute to sleep quality as it releases serotonin. A test in Japan was conducted to test the effectiveness of MLD on menopausal women, samples were taken of the women’s saliva after MLD, and the results showed a 44% reduction in cortisol (the stress hormone), meaning the women felt less stressed overall.
